Our Shawarma Special, Arabic style: tenderly grilled chicken rolled in thin flatbread and toasted golden, so every roll stays crisp outside and juicy within. Served alongside crisp fries, fresh coleslaw, cucumber and carrot, pickled peppers and creamy garlic sauce. When people look for shawarma in Mannheim, they’re usually thinking of a wrap to eat on the go. The Special is how people in Syria, Lebanon and Jordan like to eat shawarma sitting down: as a full meal on a plate.

Where shawarma comes from

The name goes back to the Turkish çevirme, ‘turning’ – a reference to the vertical rotisserie that appeared in the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century. Layer by layer, the marinated meat cooks in front of the heat, turning crisp outside and staying juicy inside. In the Levant, this became the shawarma that’s now sold on every street corner from Cairo to Baghdad.

What ‘Arabic style’ means

In many Levantine snack bars, you can order shawarma arabi: the meat is rolled in thin bread, toasted on the grill and served on a plate with fries, pickles and garlic sauce. That’s exactly how our Special comes – with coleslaw, cucumber and carrot to keep things fresh.

If you prefer it simpler, go for the shawarma sandwich with fries: a single pressed wrap, cut in half. And without any bread at all, there’s the shawarma plate.

Before and alongside

A little bowl of hummus or a fattoush to share is well worth it before the rolls arrive. If there are several of you, start with a large mixed starter platter.

FAQ

Good to know

What meat is in the shawarma?

Chicken. All three shawarma dishes on our menu – the Special, the plate and the sandwich – come from the chicken rotisserie.

What’s the difference between the Special, the plate and the sandwich?

The Special is rolled, toasted shawarma served as a full plate. The shawarma plate comes without bread, with the meat served straight on the plate. The sandwich is a single pressed wrap with pickles and fries.

Do you have vegetarian shawarma?

Not shawarma itself. If you don’t eat meat, go for the falafel plate or the falafel burger – both are vegetarian.

Can I order shawarma for the office or a party?

Yes. Shawarma is one of the options in our business lunch box. Send us an enquiry with the date and number of guests, and we’ll get back to you with a quote within 24 hours.

Is the meat halal?

Yes, all the meat at Dunya is halal.
