Biryani is one of those dishes that crossed the sea and made itself at home. It was born on the Indian subcontinent, travelled to the Arabian Gulf with traders and families, and is now as much a part of life there as kabsa or mandi. Here in Mannheim, you’ll find it Gulf-style – with chicken or with lamb.

Rice in the starring role

In a biryani, the rice is never just a side. It’s cooked with spices and topped with toasted almonds and crispy vermicelli, which add crunch to the soft grains. In this version, half a chicken sits on top, grilled over an open flame with a well-spiced crust.

What comes with it

The little bowl of stewed chickpeas is more than decoration: spoon it over the rice to make it juicier. The tomato and cucumber salad brings some freshness in between all the warm spices.

Biryani or mandi?

Both are rice dishes with chicken, but they taste quite different. With mandi it’s all about the smoky flavour, and the rice is plainer. Biryani is defined by its spices, nuts and vermicelli. For lamb, try our lamb shank biryani.
